Fire & EMS

Fire Departments and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) risk their lives everyday. Unfortunately, some of these risks are present in their own station. Exposure to diesel exhaust has been documented by the World Health Organization as a known carcinogen. Every time fire trucks or ambulances are started in quarters diesel exhaust permeates living areas, offices, kitchens and sleeping areas. The Clean Air Act mandated diesel engine manufacturers implement diesel particulate filtration (DPF) systems starting in 2007 in an effort to improve the quality of the air we breathe outside. This legislation was a result of high correlations of cancer and respiratory ailments in areas heavily populated with diesel powered equipment such as trucks, trains and generators.

These DPF systems have created a false sense of security by eliminating the cloud of diesel smoke we were accustomed to seeing. Ultra-fine particulates still pass through the DPF system along with gasses that present possibly an even greater risk. These ultra-fine particles by-pass the body’s natural filtration system and travel to the alveoli region of the lungs. Studies have shown that firefighters have a much greater risk of contracting cancer.

Today, it is important to install reliable plymovent exhaust systems, diesel exhaust removal systems, source capture exhaust system, and firehouse exhaust systems. These pieces of equipment are essential for preventing serious problems such as firefighter cancer.

At Clean Air Company, our products help protect your workers from the aforementioned risks.
