Crystal Aire UV Ambient Air Purifier

Over the past few years, we have seen a surge in various types of airborne viruses such as swine flu, avian flu, Ebola, Legionnaires’, mumps, meningitis, anthrax, tuberculosis, whooping cough, measles, and smallpox all have begun to reappear. With increased international trade and travel, regional disease outbreaks can become global issues quickly where we see viruses reappear that were once almost eradicated.

With the recent COVID-19 pandemic there is an increased need for better indoor filtration that can handle airborne viruses. Changing the filters in the HVAC system to a more efficient filter is one option, but not very effective given the size of the particle we’re trying to capture.

The COVID-19 particle is .1 micron in size (1 micron = 125,500 of an inch) and is transmitted through the air by attaching to respiratory droplets. Respiratory droplets vary in size from 1 micron to 100 microns. Sneezing typically produces droplets in the 100-micron size range while coughing droplets are much smaller, around 1 – 5 microns. Respiratory droplets smaller than 50 microns will stay in a state of suspension in the air for longer periods of time while droplets larger than 50 microns will fall to the floor.

Establishing an air pattern to capture the droplets and establishing a high air turnover, 6 – 8 air changes per hour, are extremely important components in the capture of biological particulates in indoor air filtration. Once the droplets are captured, they need to be filtered and killed. We do this using true HEPA filtration which is 99.9% effective at capturing particles as small as .3 microns. The MERV 13 filters in typical HVAC systems are only 50% effective at capturing particles in the .3 to 1 micron size.

Once the particles are captured on the filter, they are killed using either bi-polar ionization or ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI). The UV energy is able to penetrate the cell wall and disrupts its structure by breaking the base pairs of the DNA structure.
