BENZENE IN DIESEL EXHAUST

Researchers now estimate the average active firefighters, responding with diesel apparatus, on 4 to 6 calls per shift, may increase the danger of lung cancer by up to 200 percent, breathing diesel exhaust at a daily exposure average of 172-748 milligrams per cubic meter. Read more

HEALTH ASSESSMENT DIESEL

This assessment examined information regarding the possible health hazards associated with exposure to diesel engine exhaust (DE), which is a mixture of gases and particles. The assessment concludes that long-term (i.e., chronic) inhalation exposure is likely to pose a lung cancer hazard to humans, as well as damage the lung in other ways, depending on exposure. IMC 2003

Source Capture System. A mechanical exhaust system designed and constructed to capture air contaminants at their source and to exhaust such contaminants to the outdoor atmosphere. These systems include hose-type exhaust systems for direct attachment to motor vehicle engine exhaust pipes and hood systems for individual contaminant producing machines. Read more

NFPA 1500

The containment of the vehicle exhaust emissions should be achieved with a goal of elimination of all exhaust emissions from the breathing zone of the human inhabitants present in the station. Any system installed to suit this purpose should be made using "best available control technology." Read more

NIOSH BULLETIN

On the basis of the results of these studies, NIOSH recommends that whole diesel exhaust be regarded as "a potential occupational carcinogen," as defined in the Cancer Policy of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Read more

NIOSH POCKET GUIDE TO CHEMICAL HAZARDS

Potential occupational carcinogens means any substance, or combination or mixture of substances, which causes an increased incidence of benign and/or malignant neoplasms, or a substantial decrease in the latency period between exposure and onset of neoplasms in humans or in one or more experimental mammalian species as the result of any oral, respiratory or dermal exposure, or any other exposure which results in the induction of tumors at a site other than the site of administration. This definition also includes any substance which is metabolized into one or more potential occupational carcinogens by mammals. Read more

NOZZLE LEAKAGE STULL REPORT SUMMARY

Given the expense to install a source capture system in a fire station, it is imperative that fire departments carefully examine differences between source capture systems and ensure that the installation has been
performed correctly. Testing using practices similar to the subject study are recommended to determine if the selected source capture system controls diesel exhaust operation. Based on this study, choosing a source capture design that affords an air-tight seal with the apparatus tailpipe should be one of the essential criteria for selection of a source capture system.
